Bench Alternatives (2026): 10 Bookkeeping Services Compared

By Piyush Gupta, founder of NQD.ai · Checked · 8 min read

The short answer

The closest alternatives to Bench are services where a person keeps your books for a fixed monthly fee: Wave Advisors (from $149 billed yearly, US and Canada), Merritt Bookkeeping ($250), Pilot (from $299 billed yearly), QuickBooks Live (from $300 plus QuickBooks), Xendoo ($395) and Bookkeeper360 ($400). Bench itself costs $199 to $649 a month.

The biggest difference isn't the price; it's where your books live. Bench keeps them on its own platform and exports them as Excel files. Pilot, Xendoo and QuickBooks Live keep them in QuickBooks Online or Xero, which you can take to your next bookkeeper.

Everything here comes from each provider's own website, read on October 22, 2026. We keep books too, so we've put ourselves in the same table and said so.

Bench today

Bench is an online bookkeeping service for US businesses, owned by Employer.com. It publishes three plans: Bookkeeping Light at $199 a month for businesses with up to $250K a year in revenue, Bookkeeping at $399, and Bookkeeping + Tax at $649, which adds business tax filing and needs a 12-month commitment if paid monthly. Paying for the year saves 20%: $1,910, $3,830 or $6,230. This year's catch-up is free with an annual plan.

A dedicated bookkeeper keeps your books on Bench's own platform, on a modified cash basis by default, and finishes them within 15 business days of getting your documents. Bench also offers accrual bookkeeping and a fractional bookkeeper ($55 an hour plus $1,200 onboarding) working inside QuickBooks Online.

In December 2024 Bench told customers its platform would no longer be accessible; its own transition FAQ says Bench Accounting, Inc. became insolvent on December 27. Employer.com announced the acquisition on December 30, and service resumed in January 2025.

Why businesses look beyond Bench

  • They want their books in QuickBooks or Xero. Bench says it uses its own proprietary software and doesn't sync data from other bookkeeping software. Its exports are Excel files, and it doesn't describe a way to move its ledger into QuickBooks or Xero.
  • They're outside the US. Bench serves US-based businesses only.
  • They need accrual books. Bench works on a modified cash basis by default; accrual is a separate service line in QuickBooks Online.
  • The terms. Plans renew automatically unless you give notice 15 days before a monthly renewal or 60 days before a yearly one, and fees are non-refundable. Bench's terms also set overage rates of $215–$245 an hour for work beyond a plan's service-time allocation, which the pricing page doesn't state.
  • December 2024. Bench paused operations, and customers had to consent to the transfer of their services and data to Employer.com before they could continue or change them. Some businesses now prefer books in software they control.

Which one fits

  • The lowest price for a person keeping your books: Wave Advisors (US and Canada), Fincent Pro or Merritt.
  • Books in QuickBooks Online or Xero that stay yours: Xendoo, Pilot, QuickBooks Live or NQD.ai.
  • Tax filing in the same plan, as with Bench + Tax: 1-800Accountant Business Complete ($469 billed yearly) or Fincent Advanced (from $389).
  • An online store: Finaloop, which works only with e-commerce businesses.
  • Doing the books yourself with good software: Kick, from $40 a month billed yearly.
  • A UK business: Bench, Pilot, 1-800Accountant and Kick say they serve the US, Wave the US and Canada, and none of the others says it serves the UK. NQD.ai keeps books for UK businesses.

How to switch from Bench

  1. Download everything first. Bench's year-end financial package includes your income statement, balance sheet, general ledger, trial balance and journal entries; download transactions by account too, and any receipts you uploaded. Bench says you keep login access after you leave, but its terms say each side returns or destroys the other's confidential information, which includes your data, within 30 days of the agreement ending. Don't rely on the login.
  2. Check your notice date: 15 days before a monthly renewal, 60 days before a yearly one. The rest of an initial term is still payable.
  3. Choose where the books will live, ideally a QuickBooks Online or Xero subscription in your own name, so the next move is easier.
  4. Start from Bench's closing balances. With no direct import, your new bookkeeper sets up the opening balances from Bench's trial balance and works forward from your bank statements, the same way Bench starts when someone switches from QuickBooks.
  5. Price the gap. If months are missing, catch-up is usually billed separately: Merritt charges $100–$200 per month behind, Xendoo from $295 a month, Bookkeeper360 from $1,000 a project, and Intuit's QuickBooks cleanup from $600.
  6. Tell your CPA where next year's books will come from.

Where NQD.ai fits

We keep books, so read this part with that in mind. We work in your own QuickBooks Online or Xero account (or set one up in your name), close your books by the 5th business day and have a person review every close. Plans are $299, $499 and $799 a month for up to 100, 300 and 700 transactions, for US and UK businesses. We don't file taxes; we hand your CPA clean books. You can leave with 30 days' notice, and your books are already in your own account.

Our first 10 founding clients get 6 months free and their catch-up cleanup free.

On December 27, 2024, Bench told customers its platform would no longer be accessible, and Bench's own transition FAQ says Bench Accounting, Inc. became insolvent that day. On December 30, 2024, Employer.com announced it had acquired Bench; service resumed in January 2025, and Bench has operated as an Employer.com company since. Services paid for before December 30, 2024 aren't eligible for refunds.

Is Bench still in business in 2026?

Yes. Bench serves US businesses and publishes three plans: Bookkeeping Light at $199 a month (for revenue up to $250K), Bookkeeping at $399, and Bookkeeping + Tax at $649, or $1,910, $3,830 and $6,230 paid yearly.

What software does Bench use?

Its own. Bench says it uses its own proprietary software to complete your books and doesn't sync data from other bookkeeping software. It works on a modified cash basis by default and offers accrual bookkeeping as a separate service in QuickBooks Online. Reports and the year-end financial package export as Excel files.

Can I move my books from Bench to QuickBooks or Xero?

Not as a direct import: Bench doesn't describe a way to move its ledger into QuickBooks or Xero. Download your year-end financial package (income statement, balance sheet, general ledger, trial balance and journal entries) and your transaction exports before you leave. A new bookkeeper then starts your QuickBooks or Xero file from Bench's closing balances and your bank statements.
