How Much Should a Small Business Spend on Google Ads? (2026)

By Piyush Gupta, founder of NQD.ai · Checked · 8 min read

The short answer

Google Ads has no minimum, so set the budget from the leads you need: across US industries a lead costs a median $66.69 in 2026, so 20 leads a month costs about $1,334 in ads, an average daily budget of about $44.

By industry a lead costs from $26.84 (arts and entertainment) to $131.63 (legal services). Give a new campaign at least 2 weeks before judging it: Google's bidding learns for up to 7 days, and Google recommends judging over 2 conversion cycles or 2 weeks, whichever is longer.

The costs come from WordStream's 2026 benchmarks, the medians of 13,474 US search campaigns on Google and Microsoft Ads from April 2025 to March 2026; the rules and offers from Google's own pages, read on October 22, 2026. We run ads for clients, so where we mention ourselves we say so.

How to work out your budget

  1. Decide how many leads you need a month: calls, form fills or bookings, whatever turns into business for you.
  2. Find what a lead costs in your industry in the table below. Treat it as a starting estimate; your own figure shows within a few weeks.
  3. Multiply: leads × cost per lead is your monthly ad budget. Divide by 30.4 for the average daily budget Google asks for.
  4. Check it pays: the most you can afford per lead is the share of leads that become customers × what a customer is worth to you in profit.

For example, a home improvement business wanting 20 leads a month, at WordStream's $90.92 a lead, needs about $1,818 a month, or $60 a day. Suppose 1 in 4 leads becomes a job worth $500 in profit: that's 5 jobs and $2,500 of profit for $1,818 of ads, and the business can afford up to $125 a lead. Swap in your own numbers; the close rate and profit are the ones only you know.

A few leads a month is too few to tell whether the ads work, so in an expensive industry a small budget mostly buys uncertainty.

How Google spends your budget

  • It's an average. You set an average daily budget. On a busy day Google can spend up to twice it, but for most campaigns it won't charge more than 30.4 times it in a month.
  • Ad schedules don't lower the month. If you only show ads on weekdays, Google still paces toward 30.4 times your daily budget over the days the campaign runs.
  • “Limited by budget” means your budget is lower than Google's recommended amount to capture all available impressions and clicks, so it shows your ads less often. Google says such a campaign “can still be successful”.
  • Start small. That's Google's own tip, and it recommends budget options for a new Search campaign based on similar advertisers. Most people start with Maximize clicks or Manual CPC bidding, and Google suggests those until you have conversion data.
  • How you pay: with cost-per-click bidding, only when someone clicks. Google charges your payment method when spending reaches a threshold, or on the first of the month, and can raise the threshold over time.

How long to test

Ads are typically approved within one business day. After that, give it at least 2 weeks:

  • A new bid strategy shows “Learning” for up to 7 days, and Google says it never lasts longer.
  • Google recommends judging performance over 2 conversion cycles or 2 weeks, whichever is longer.
  • After raising a budget, it suggests allowing 7 to 10 days for the system to adjust.
  • For Target CPA bidding, Google suggests evaluating the last 30 days, with at least 30 conversions.

So budget for a test of at least a month, and set up conversion tracking before you start: without it you're paying for clicks you can't connect to leads.

Google's new-advertiser credit

Google gives new advertisers ad credit once they spend a set amount in their first 60 days: in the US, $500 for $500, $1,750 for $1,500 or $4,000 for $3,000; in the UK, £400 for £400, £1,500 for £1,200 or £4,000 for £2,500. The account must be under 14 days old when you redeem the offer, the credit can't count toward the spend, it's typically applied within 35 days, and it expires 60 days after that. It's worth claiming, but plan the budget as if it weren't there.

In the UK

The benchmarks above are US campaigns in dollars; we haven't found a UK equivalent with published methodology. Google's free Keyword Planner shows estimated costs for your own keywords and location, though it needs billing details first and bases a new account's forecasts on all advertisers' history. Google adds a 2% Digital Services Tax fee to ads shown in the UK, wherever your business is based.

The ad budget is only part of the cost; see what Google Ads management costs for what agencies and freelancers charge on top.

Where NQD.ai fits

We run ads, so read this part with that in mind. Your ad budget stays on your own card and goes straight to Google and Meta. We charge a $490 a month base (£365 in the UK) for tracking, campaign builds and a weekly written review, plus a results fee agreed in writing before launch: a rate per qualified lead, or 5% of verified revenue capped at $1,470 a month (£1,095). Results are counted from your CRM or store, never the ad platform's dashboard.

Our first 3 founding clients pay no base for 3 months. Anyone can get a free 10-minute recorded audit of their ad account.

Frequently asked questions

How much should a small business spend on Google Ads per month?

Google has no minimum, so work back from the leads you need: multiply them by the cost per lead in your industry. Across US industries the 2026 median cost per lead is $66.69 (WordStream), so 10 leads a month costs about $667 in ads and 20 about $1,334. By industry, a lead costs from $26.84 (arts and entertainment) to $131.63 (legal services).

What is the average cost per lead on Google Ads in 2026?

$66.69, according to WordStream's 2026 benchmarks: the median across 13,474 US search campaigns from April 2025 to March 2026. The median cost per click is $5.42 and the median conversion rate 8.18%. Arts and entertainment ($26.84), automotive repair ($29.96) and restaurants ($30.57) are cheapest; legal services ($131.63), furniture ($106.70) and real estate ($102.51) dearest.

Is $500 a month enough for Google Ads?

It buys about 7 leads a month at the 2026 median cost per lead of $66.69: about 19 in arts and entertainment, about 4 in legal services. That's enough to test whether Google Ads works for a local business with cheap leads, but thin for an industry where a lead costs $100 or more, where a few weeks may not produce enough leads to judge.

How do I set a daily budget in Google Ads?

Divide your monthly budget by 30.4. Google treats it as an average: on a busy day it can spend up to twice your average daily budget, but for most campaigns it won't charge more than 30.4 times it in a month. Pausing ads on some days with an ad schedule doesn't lower that monthly limit; Google paces toward it whichever days the campaign runs.

How long should I run Google Ads before judging the results?

At least 2 weeks. A new bid strategy shows a 'Learning' status for up to 7 days, and Google recommends evaluating performance over 2 conversion cycles or a 2-week window, whichever is longer. After a budget increase, Google suggests allowing 7 to 10 days for the system to adjust. For Target CPA bidding, Google suggests evaluating the last 30 days, with at least 30 conversions.

Does Google give new advertisers free ad credit?

Yes. In the US, Google offers $500 in ad credit when you spend $500 in your first 60 days, $1,750 for $1,500, or $4,000 for $3,000. In the UK it's £400 for £400, £1,500 for £1,200, or £4,000 for £2,500. The account must be under 14 days old when you redeem it, the credit can't count toward the spend, it's typically applied within 35 days, and it expires 60 days after it's applied.

Does Google Ads charge a monthly fee?

No. Google says there's no minimum spending commitment: you set the budget and, with cost-per-click bidding, pay only when someone clicks your ad. For ads shown in the UK, Google adds a 2% Digital Services Tax fee, wherever your business is based. What you pay someone to manage the ads is separate.
