How Much Do Facebook and Instagram Ads Cost for a Small Business? (2026)
The short answer
Facebook and Instagram lead ads cost a median $27.39 a lead in 2026, so 20 leads a month costs about $548 in ads, an average of $18 a day. Traffic ads cost a median $0.60 a click.
By industry, a lead costs from $12.30 (career and employment) to $61.56 (dentists). Meta has no minimum spend, may spend up to 75% over your daily budget on a given day, and learns for about 50 results after each significant edit before delivery settles.
The costs come from WordStream's 2026 benchmarks, medians of US campaigns from April 2025 to June 2026; Meta's rules from its Business Help Center, read on October 22, 2026. We run Meta ads for clients, so where we mention ourselves we say so.
Cost per lead by industry
For campaigns using Meta's leads objective, cheapest lead first, with the monthly ad budget for 10 and 20 leads at that cost. Budget = leads × cost per lead; divide by 30.4 for a daily budget.
| Industry | Cost per lead | 10 leads a month | 20 leads a month | Cost per click | Conversion rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| All industries | $27.39 | $274 | $548 | $1.80 | 8.54% |
| Career and employment | $12.30 | $123 | $246 | $0.73 | 5.38% |
| Real estate | $13.74 | $137 | $275 | $1.27 | 9.95% |

| Industrial and commercial | $35.87 | $359 | $717 | $1.55 | 4.5% |
| Personal services | $38.09 | $381 | $762 | $1.62 | 6.61% |
| Furniture | $39.25 | $393 | $785 | $2.18 | 5.66% |
| Home and home improvement | $42.95 | $430 | $859 | $2.18 | 5.32% |
| Beauty and personal care | $50.91 | $509 | $1,018 | $2.97 | 5.63% |
| Dentists and dental services | $61.56 | $616 | $1,231 | $5.70 | 6.07% |
WordStream's lead figures come from 452 campaigns, and some industries from as few as 4, so read a single industry's number as a rough guide. For example, a home improvement business wanting 20 leads a month would budget about $859, or $28 a day.

How Meta spends your budget
- No minimum to advertise. In Meta's words, “you decide how much you want to spend”. Minimum daily budgets do exist for each ad set and vary by country and objective; Ads Manager tells you if you're below one.
- A daily budget is an average. Meta may spend up to 75% over it on a given day, but no more than 7 times it in a week ending Saturday at midnight, and it will consider refunds for spending beyond those limits.
- A lifetime budget is a hard cap for the whole campaign or ad set, spent across its dates.
- If you set a cost-per-result goal, Meta says the daily budget should be at least 5 times that goal.
- How you pay: by default you're charged for impressions, unless you choose otherwise when creating the ad. With a card or PayPal, Meta charges you when costs reach your payment threshold, and on your monthly bill date for anything left.
The learning phase
After you launch or significantly edit an ad set, Meta spends a while learning how to deliver it. That usually ends after about 50 results in the week after the last significant edit. Significant edits include changing the targeting, creative or optimisation event, adding an ad, changing the bid strategy, and pausing for 7 days or more; a budget change counts only if it's big (Meta's example: $100 to $101 isn't likely to restart learning).
At the median cost per lead, 50 leads a week is about $1,370 a week for one ad set. An ad set unlikely to reach that pace is “learning limited”, which Meta says isn't a penalty; common causes are a small audience or a low budget. Our practical advice: put a small budget into one ad set rather than several. And, as Meta advises, wait until an ad set is out of learning before editing it.
Meta or Google?
On WordStream's 2026 medians, Meta is cheaper per lead ($27.39 against $66.69 on Google) and per click ($0.60 to $1.80 against $5.42). But the leads differ: someone on Google is searching for what you sell, someone on Meta is scrolling. So compare what a customer costs on each, not a lead. WordStream's own view: “It's not that one channel is better than the other; it's that they are complementary to one another.” For Google budgets by industry, see how much to spend on Google Ads.
In the UK
The benchmarks are US campaigns in dollars; we haven't found a UK equivalent with published methodology. Meta adds a 2% location fee, to cover the Digital Services Tax, for ads shown to people in the UK, wherever your business is based; it's separate from your budget, and VAT is calculated on top. If Meta bills you from its UK office it adds VAT, which a VAT-registered business can usually recover.
The ad budget is only part of the cost; see what ads management costs for agency and freelance fees.
Where NQD.ai fits
We run ads, so read this part with that in mind. We manage Meta and Google ads, and your ad budget stays on your own card. We charge a $490 a month base (£365 in the UK) for tracking, campaign builds and a weekly written review, plus a results fee agreed in writing before launch: a rate per qualified lead, or 5% of verified revenue capped at $1,470 a month (£1,095). Results are counted from your CRM or store, never the ad platform's dashboard.
Our first 3 founding clients pay no base for 3 months. Anyone can get a free 10-minute recorded audit of their ad account.

Frequently asked questions
How much do Facebook ads cost for a small business?
Meta has no minimum: you decide how much to spend. What matters is what a lead costs: WordStream's 2026 benchmarks put the median cost per lead for Facebook and Instagram lead campaigns at $27.39, so 10 leads a month costs about $274 in ads and 20 about $548. By industry it runs from $12.30 a lead (career and employment) to $61.56 (dentists).
What is the average cost per lead for Facebook ads in 2026?
$27.39, the median across 452 US lead campaigns from April 2025 to June 2026 (WordStream). Career and employment ($12.30), real estate ($13.74) and arts and entertainment ($14.59) were cheapest; dentists ($61.56), beauty and personal care ($50.91) and home improvement ($42.95) dearest. Some industries rest on only a handful of campaigns, so treat them as rough.
What is the average cost per click for Facebook ads?
$0.60 for traffic campaigns, which aim for the most clicks to your website, and $1.80 for lead campaigns, according to WordStream's 2026 medians of US campaigns. Traffic-campaign clicks ranged from $0.34 (arts and entertainment) to $0.86 (finance and insurance).
Can Meta spend more than my daily budget?
Yes. Meta says it may spend up to 75% over your daily budget on a given day, so up to 175% of it, but no more than 7 times your daily budget in a week ending Saturday at midnight, and it will consider refunds for spending beyond those limits. A lifetime budget, by contrast, is a hard cap.
What is the learning phase in Facebook ads?
It's the period after you launch or significantly edit an ad set while Meta learns how to deliver it. It usually ends after about 50 results in the week after the last significant edit. An ad set unlikely to get that many is 'learning limited', which Meta says isn't a penalty. At the median cost per lead, 50 leads a week is about $1,370 a week, so many small budgets stay learning limited. Meta advises waiting until an ad set is out of learning before editing it.
Are Facebook ads cheaper than Google Ads?
Per lead and per click, usually: WordStream's 2026 medians are $27.39 a lead on Meta lead campaigns against $66.69 on Google, and $0.60 to $1.80 a click on Meta against $5.42 on Google. But people on Google are searching for what you sell, and people on Meta are not, so compare what a customer costs, not just a lead. WordStream itself calls the two complementary rather than one being better.
Do Facebook ads cost more in the UK?
The benchmarks above are US campaigns in dollars. For ads shown to people in the UK, Meta adds a 2% location fee to cover the Digital Services Tax, wherever your business is based; it's separate from your budget. If Meta bills you from its UK office it also adds VAT, which a VAT-registered business can usually recover.
